Why does Yemeni coffee cost more?

Small family farms, steep mountain terraces and a lot of handwork. What goes into every bag.

If you've shopped for Yemeni coffee, you'll have noticed it usually costs more than coffee from elsewhere. Here's what goes into it.

Small farms on steep mountains

Coffee in Yemen grows on narrow stone terraces in the mountains. Our coffee comes from farms around Jarmah in Haraaz, at 1,800 to 2,460 metres. There's no room for machines, so the farms are small and the work is done by hand.

Picked and sorted by hand

The cherries are picked by hand as they ripen, between October and March. After drying, every bean is sorted by hand. It takes time, and it's what gives each of our three coffees its character.

Dried the traditional way

The whole cherries are dried in the sun on raised beds, a slow natural process that gives the coffee its depth.

Direct from one family

We source one harvest directly from the Al-Emadi family, so you know exactly where your coffee comes from.
